8 Ways to Stay Healthy During Quarantine

Staying at home for long periods can be challenging to remain physically active.

Sedentary behaviors and low levels of physical activity can significantly affect your overall health and well-being. Not to mention that being on self-quarantine causes a lot of stress and anxiety, challenging your mental health.

Here are some helpful tips that you can stay healthy during home quarantine:

Keep Your Home Clean

If you have to go to the grocery store or pharmacy, keep in mind that having contact with other individuals increases your chances to be exposed to the virus

Fortunately, you can reduce your risk of spreading the virus at home by:

  • Washing your hands immediately with soap and water for 20 seconds as soon as you return from home.
  • Regularly cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces regularly such as doorknobs, remote controls, sinks, and toilets.

Not only do you protect yourself and your loved ones by doing so, but cleaning will also give you something to do when you are stuck indoors!

You can pick one area that you can focus on each day. Better yet, come up with a weekly cleaning schedule!

Go for a Walk

Unless it is prohibited that you go out of your house, going for a walk is a great way to go out and stay healthy, without having to break quarantine. If you have a pet such as a dog, then even better, as they could help you cope during these trying times.

Going out of the house every once in a while will be great for both of you. Getting fresh air and spending your time outdoors will help boost your physical and mental health.

However, you should check the weather before going out. But if you insist on going out while it is raining (which we do not recommend), make sure to wear a rain jacket.

Establish Routines

Establishing a routine can be helpful whether you are a parent, working from home due to quarantine, or a retiree who cannot go out of the house.

If you have kids, you can engage them by helping them plan their meals each day to introduce healthy meal choices.

On the other hand, if you live alone, it helps that you connect with the outside world often. Whether it is through your computer or your phone, make it a point that you regularly reach out to others.

Eat Healthily

If you are stuck at home for long periods, then you might crave for tasty snacks, causing you to gain a lot of weight. So, be careful about your food, as well as the time that you eat.

Breakfast, for instance, is the most important meal of the day. So consuming nutrient-rich foods can fuel you for the rest of the day.

Stick with a regimented meal plan to:

  • Have a well-balanced diet.
  • Avoid the temptation of ordering take-outs.
  • Regulate your food consumption and avoid overindulgence.

Stay Hydrated

Enough fluid intake will keep you strong, as well as fight off viruses and infection. You could go with the following hydration techniques such as:

  • Tracking your food intake using various apps.
  • Drinking a glass of water first before every meal.
  • Adding some natural flavor to your water with a fruit infusion.
  • Using a large, reusable water bottle.
  • Replacing your drinks, like soda or coffee, with water.

Maintain Your Mental Health

While you must stay on top of the news information with what is going on during quarantine, it could also be easy to get overwhelmed. Not to mention that information load can increase your stress and anxiety levels.

You can cope and maintain your mental well-being by doing the following:

  • Giving yourself breaks from the news and on social media.
  • Getting plenty of snooze time.
  • Engaging with a video chat with your friends and family.
  • Practicing meditation.

Don’t Forget to Socialize

Being on home, quarantine does not mean that you have to isolate yourself from your loved ones or the people close to you.

You can also use this time to get in touch with your old friends that you have not spoken to for a while.

Use that time to make some heartwarming conversations, and take advantage of online social media platforms like Skype, Zoom, and Facebook Messenger to make it easier for you.

Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep plays a huge role in boosting your immune system, metabolism, and even learning. It also helps you stock up energy for the incoming day.

Getting enough shut-eye, like a  good 8-hour sleep every night, will help you keep a strong mind and body.

Over to You

Nowadays, many people around the world are forced to carry their everyday routines within the comfort of their own homes. So, it helps that you take advantage of your time, and go through a few coping strategies when you’re indoors.

It’s also important to stay healthy, as well as to be physically and mentally fit, during the entire duration of the quarantine period.
